Topography and Geology > Step One

Question: Examine the topographic image of the Valley and Ridge province of the Appalachian Mountains (below). What color represents resistant rocks? What color represents easily eroded rocks?

Question: If you've studied geology, notice that the topography is a series of parallel ridges and valleys. What kind of rocks do you think might form the bedrock here, igneous, sedimentary or metamorphic? Why?

Question: Now put your two answers together and make a guess as to the actual rock type (ex: granite, sandstone etc.) of the resistant rocks and eroded rocks.
